Recently, six members of our club spent 4 days metal detecting on some very historic private properties in Virginia. Discoveries ranged from early colonial to the 1870s. Some amazing discoveries were made. Some of the highlights are pictured below. These included coins such as cut Spanish silver pistereens, indian head pennies including the key date 1877, a silver 3 cent piece, a large penny. Relics included many buttons, some military and one Confederate, dropped and fired Civil War bullets from both sides and lots of other interesting colonial buckles and mounts. This hunt even turned up an early gold item! This was a portion of an intricately engraved patriotic eagle's head pocket watch chain dating to before the Civil War. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that it was dug in the path of Civil War soldiers. This could have possibly been lost by an officer or general!
